Sometimes you just have to stop, take a moment, and just be.
In a world where we are so work driven, it is difficult to allow yourself to be present in the moment. There is always that project you need to get done, that deadline always nagging you at the back of your mind. The never ending cycle of things we ought to be doing right now.
It has taken me quite a few years now to realise that taking a break is ok. Of course I would be lying if I were to say I would work from the moment I wake up, to the moment my head hits the pillow. However, there would always be feelings of guilt or panic that would plague my mind whenever I did stop working. I wouldn’t allow myself to fully enjoy my living. That is not healthy!
Even though I am now on my postgraduate course, probably one of the most work intensive time periods I have ever had to overcome, my mind is calmer. Why? I allow myself to enjoy my experience of being on this planet, and noting the value of listening to my needs.
It sounds relatively simple right? Just do what you feel is best for your mind and body. For me, and I believe for so many of us, the expectations that we experience and often times put upon ourselves, drive this need to constantly be working. If we’re not, we’re not good enough.
You are good enough. You deserve the break, and the time to look after your self. If your mind is wandering off, and you cannot concentrate on that spreadsheet or essay, that is a sign that you need to take a mental break. Sometimes, reflection is the best medicine.
