Getting into a routine…

I want to preface this post with first acknowledging the privileged position I am in.

Being in full time education, alongside my student loan and part-time job I am lucky to have parents who are able to support me financially. My course has taught sessions on only two days of the working week. I have no children or significant other to care for, or that depend on me. For all intents and purposes, I am free to do as I please.

Taking all that into account, I have always struggled in the self-management department. Something I am sure that a lot of people can relate to. I struggle with bouts of depression, and alongside external stressors of work and university, it is difficult to maintain positive health behaviour change.

But, the best thing I have found to help me manage my health and wellbeing is to get into my own routine. That is, my own routine, and not someone else’s. While I find that following a pre planned guide is useful at first, making long-term change has to come from within.

My routine works because it fits around my health goals, and my work/life balance. I’ll be honest and say that I am definitely not the most sociable during the week, but I make time in my routine to wind down, and spend time with friends and loved ones.

If you are struggling with going to the gym regularly, giving up smoking, or sticking to a healthy diet, making small but significant changes in your routine can make life so much easier. Even the simplest of things like going to bed an hour or two earlier could give you more energy the following day, and more concentration to stick to that diet/exercise routine, or the motivation to avoid that cigarette.

Be reasonable in what you want to achieve, but do what you can to make those goals more attainable. Sticking to a routine is just one of those ways.
